It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Window 8 is pretty cheap. I might get lucky and get that for a gift from someone

Kona, you'd still lack the PC to run it.

Why don't you just change the title of this thread to:

Does Anyone Have A Good, Fairly New PC To Give Away With Windows 7 or 8 On It?

on Jan 14, 2013

There is always Linux.

What you have now will run that, or so you said. If Windows is too much for the old thing.........

I bet this machine could run 8. That would be sight to see. Might be slow but I bet it would run it.

RedneckDude
Kona, go to the site of the maker of your MOBO, and bring up specs. It will list the CPUs compatible with your MOBO.

CPU/Processor
  • Socket: LGA775
  • Supports processor up to 3.4 GHz
  • Supports Intel Pentium 4 HT processors
Front-side bus (FSB)
  • 800 MHz

God helps those who help themselves! Things are tough all over, be happy you even have a computer. You cannot expect something for nothing.

If you have a PC that'll run the latest OS, your ok.

Then why are you asking for help?  You're contradicting yourself again.

I'm done here. Good luck, Kona.

I didn't contradict myself. I said it would probably run Windows 8 but it would be slow. That means the CPU can't keep up with the newer operating systems.

Gosh. Wish I could help. I'm blessed in that I make my living on the PC, albeit in a 3d world (Second Life). I definitely know the old PC feeling, though the one I use now is, admittedly, a bit of a gaming monster, but it took some wrestling to get it. Sucks that systems are designed thus: So when one gets outdated, you can't just replace, that, oh no. Got to replace this, then that, to support the new item. But wait! That's an old motherboard; won't handle it, best get a new one, but then the Power Supply is outdated, so change that, and then this and then that and then.. Whole new PC. >.<

I hear ya. ♥

I have an old copy of windows 98, could mail it cheap. That is your only hope from me unless you live down the road. Shipping and handling would kill anyone, extra parts or not. Have any ties to your local church or something? Maybe a local business with stuff to spare from upgrading? I wish you were down the road, I would drop off a box of stuff.

Good Luck, and I was serious about the church. You may not even need to attend, just explain your situation, if worthy, they will help.

Okay people, let's change the tone of this thread to something that's friendlier and with a bit of understanding.  We have a member with a number of issues calling out for help here, so how about we see what we can do rather than pick fault/condemn, orright?

First off, it is not just the CPU that's the bottleneck.  The mobo is also old and would not be ideal to run a more powerful processor.

So, I have an AMD Athlon x2 5600 2.9ghz that I can send from Australia without too much expense.  All that kona would need to get him out of immediate trouble then is an AM2 socket Mobo and a stock CPU cooler. Now if somebody in the US has these items laying around with no particular use in mind, they would be of great help to kona to get his machine running somewhat better than it currently does. He already has the compatible RAM, and it's just those 2 items he needs to run his machine at a reasonable speed, so how about it people, can anyone help out a fellow member who's doing it tough... in more ways than one?

Yeah, apart from PC issues and a lack of cash, kona has a number of health issues impacting on his life, and these present him with difficulties in areas of his life that most of us take for granted, so before anyone decides to heap anymore ridicule and pain upon him, try walking a mile or two in his shoes to see how it feels.  Now I'm not at liberty to discuss these health issues in any detail because they were related to me in confidence, but believe me when I say that kona isn't at all well, and a little bit of help would go a long way to lifting his spirits.

Now if I had both parts and could afford to post them I would, but I haven't and can't, so please, let's pull together as a community and make this happen.  I have the CPU, it needs a matching mobo and cooler to complete the deal.  And if somebody has an old DVD ROM laying around, that wouldn't go astray, either.

Man do I know how you feel. I forget how long I went without one, your situation and mine...not too different. Here's what I can do, I have an XP disk with the key. I can mail that to you no problem but it probably wouldn't be until the end of the month. I also have Win 7 Pro but the key was lost somehow. With that you can contact Microsoft for a new key but without a rig it would do you little good  My suggestion would be to find a place where they sell refurbished machines. Sorry Kona but as far as hardware or finances I am not in any position to do either of those. I just qualified for LIHEAP which is a program that helps people with little or no income to pay utility bills. Before that I had to sell my food stamps. Fortunately I only did that one time. Now I'm hoping you live somewhere in the US. If not well...I don't what to say. I have an old Dell laptop someone gave me but the hard drive is toast and so is the battery and charging cord. That wouldn't do you any good. Before I fell into my situation helping out would have been a no brainer. It would have been done in a heartbeat, no questions asked. It bothers me to see people doing without and it pisses me off that I can't do that anymore. I wish you the best of luck Kona.

Yeah this is about my machine. Yes my daughter has a tablet and the girlfriend has a year old notebook. Those belong to them and we do not share except in rare circumstances. ...

thanks for the answer. seems the concept for "being in need" in your country differs a lot from mine.

real advice: throw that computer of yours in the trash. do a little research on how to mod your XBOX. after all it's another full pc when you unlock it. Chinese Androird tablets or used computers can be purchased for as little as $50. now i know that wages in the US are poor, but it can't be more than one or two days of work.

on Jan 15, 2013

i wish i was in a position to help Kona.... im sorry I am not.

I truly hope you get what you need.

I agree with Starkers.. unless you have walked in the persons shoes.. you know NOTHING of their situation.

Everyone's circumstance is different.

An open heart is a beautiful thing.

I have a perfectly good CRT I could send you, but shipping would be outrageous.

Just out of curiosity where do you guys live? Kona i think for a topic like this it is required to give some info about that.
All information i as digital audience have is that your located in the US but that would not explain the high shipping costs...

Starkers is in Australia, as am I.

Shipping an old CRT to the US would be about the same as buying just about anything in the US better than Kona's P4.

False economy.

Believe it or not, however...I know of people in worse position and in worse health who are also contributing and active members of the site.

No-one is made of money.  Each person has his/her own issues of Real Life to contend with...but we do what we can...where it will help best.

In my 'real world' a person's computer's inability to run whatever OS quick/well enough is NOT an earth-shattering drama of significance.

However,

If someone has something spare...AND the cost [to them] isn't prohibitive...then do what you can.  I'm sure Kona will be grateful....
