It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

That post about IE wasn't meant to be antagonistic. It used to be around here that people warned others to not use IE.

As for me, I try not to make a fool of myself. Sorry. It happens. Live and learn I guess.

I have never not used IE.   Rather than warning people to or not to do certain things (which tends to have the cause/effect of people blindly doing this or that) I usually lean towards pushing people to educate themselves.  Least privilege is something I've mentioned repeatedly on these forums, and something I probably talk about in-person with people on a daily basis.  It has been and continues to be my firm belief that 'least privilege thinking', the education in tech that comes with learning about it and the shift in how users approach tech moving forward is the single most important aspect about the use of/integration with tech in any one person's life.

The biggest failure I believe the IT industry is responsible for, is in not educating people in that way of thinking/approach to tech.  Then again, I guess one can't blame the 'techies' (IT industry) for making a living when client machines keep coming back to them for 'repairs'.

Also... people have been taught to respect what they don't understand, hence another minor egotistical motive for keeping others ignorant. But in all honesty, after spending many, many years investing time and money in learning, I can understand somewhat selfish motives. Also, many are not educated to the point where an explanation would benefit them (at that given time).

least privilege

very true. unfortunately every Windows user that is able to change a wallpaper and capable to install tons of snake-oil shareware considers him/herself an expert/power user and would never work with anything less than administrator rights. i guess the most popular Windows "tip and trick" of recent years is how to turn off UAC.

Well with Windows 8 a lot of 'least privilege' seems finally properly built in.  I linked an article in the "Win 8 Sux" thread that goes into more detail about those things (in better wording...hehe).

Hey Ace I had a question. Did you ever get a 20 second lag between the time you pressed the power button till the time the board actually posted on screen? This board does that every time I turn it on. I was curious if this was normal.

on Mar 07, 2013

Hey Ace, still having this issue, was curious if this is normal or a defect in the board, thanks!

on Mar 07, 2013

It'll be normal, though it's possible a bios flash upgrade might change it a bit.  It'll be the auto-detect of drives, etc most likely.

20 seconds at boot isn't an 'issue' worth possibly screwing a MoBo up over by flashing the Bios and getting it wrong.

If it ain't broke...don't fix it....

I've had some mobos that took around that to post, so it's likely normal and nothing to worry about.

on Mar 07, 2013

Yep, my MSI mobo takes a bit to power up, spin the fans, etc. before the post screen appears. Nothing to worry about.

on Mar 07, 2013

Yes Kono, that is normal for that board. It has a couple of extra features / options built into the software ,so it takes it a tad longer to run the analysis as it's getting ready to boot.   -- Ace --

Look for a quick boot function in CMOS and turn it on if you have one. It will bypass a few of the boot up tests if you want it to.

on Mar 09, 2013

That option is already turned on.

For awhile my XP was so clogged up I'd start my coffee while I was waiting for it to get fired up.
