It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

My point is, I know Kona can't afford to replace his rig. But at the same time, to spend time, effort, and money on the one he has is a wasted effort because no matter what you add to that rig, it's going to be a slow, slug of a machine, no matter what.

No, Jim, not exactly.  With an AM2 socket mobo to go with his current RAM and the CPU I have to donate, he'd have a fairly decent machine ha would do him quite a while.  Okay, the tower's old and the DVD Rom is dying, but the essential running gear wouldn't be too shabby.

AS for Starkers. you just bought some space rig and windows eight, with like 50 gig of ram, obviously you are doing well, does not mean the rest of the world has what you have to offer, so wear our shoes.

Um, Doortech, you have no idea, none at all.  How easy it must be for you to sit the other side of the screen, read a few words and suddenly know all there is to know about me.  Hmm, have I news for you.

Firstly, I am a disabled pensioner and not at all well off... however, I am as tight as a fishes arse and keep my living expenses as low as possible to afford things I want.

Secondly, I do not smoke; drink much or very often; go out for meals, clubbing or pubbing; go out to movies; buy clothing very often or run a car.

Thirdly, I save like buggery each year so I can afford to rebuild my PC/upgrade tech.  Oh, and seeing as how you remember my "space rig" so well, you'll recall I went Cheap with AMD, only 16 gigs of RAM, and that it cost me around 700 bucks to upgrade...and Win 8 cost me just 40 bucks some months later.

So, Doortech, if you're healthy, mobile and can get out and about, I'll gladly trade it for my arthritic, immobile, hardly ever get out life that's often wracked with pain, depression and sickness.  Yeah, walk 50 yards in my shoes!

Can starkers do the same with the processor.

Yes, absolutely!  All I need is to know that we have a compatible mobo and it's in the post.... ASAP.

Thing is, people are willing to help kona out, and that pleases me immensely. Hopefully it all comes together soon and the arts are on the way to kona soon.

Oh, and Doortech, please don't take my previous post to heart... was just trying to show it's not all black or white, and that a few lines of text in a forum is hardly enough to put a sum on another's life... to assess their achievements and/or shortcomings, especially when misjudging someone you actually know in person can sometimes come too easily.

As for people assessing/misjudging kona on the basis of his text, well he rarely strings more than a line together because of his health issues, so it's sometimes going to take more than a post and a few questions to get the full gist of what he's trying to say.  Put it this way, it took reading several forum posts and PMs before I began to understand just how deep kona's issues really go, so hey, give him a break if all the information isn't forthcoming all at once.

Starkers. no trade. Your shoes sound horrible.. I apologize for venting on you. I am not judging you. And I remember your machine because I was jealous of it , not because I thought you were wealthy. Please accept an apology and I am in for helping. Saw nothing usable at TigerDirect so we need to find a board I can purchase via credit card and have shipped to kona. Gotta go to work now, will check back around 3 this afternoon.

Hope were square , if not , I will have to suck up some more later,LOL.

Forgot to ask, Starkers, can you swing the shipping on the processor, if not I may have one around. Not sure if it would be as good , but will throw it out there as an option.

Should we move to pm's with this, or are we still hoping for more contributions. I would like to stay here until we locate a board though if okay with Stardock.

I appreciate what all you guys are doing. Coming together like this is more than just a feel good moment. It shows how much we care. You guys are the best!

I am home Kona and Starkers, and I looked at that board you were eyeing, that is a good deal, I am in. I really hope you can wait , I get paid Friday, will get everything lined up as far as credit card and such, will need a shipping address and such, you can PM me. I am not sure on this next offer, but, I have like ten 15inch lcds, I salvaged them from work, I would love to send you one , but am terrified to know the shipping cost. I will look into it. I will await your next communications. Brian.

Shipping an LCD shouldn't be to much. They are fairly lightweight. I sent you my address in a PM, you could figure out shipping cost from that message. I would love to have a LCD, this monitor is almost dead.

Kona, that dvd drive may not be lost. I wonder if you have ever cleaned the laser eye? It is easy. Just remove the drive, take off the cover, clean the eye with alchohol and a cotton swab. I have extended mine by as much as two years by cleaning. WORTH A SHOT.

on Jan 16, 2013

I'll look into it. Thanks.

Anothertip, if you are having trouble with disc's ejecting, not opening, that usually is just the tiny belt. A tiny amount of nail polish remover on your fingers applied to the belt will tack it up enough to fix that for a bit. You can also upgrade from klop to klod or vise versa not sure it would make a difference though. Maybe someone here knows more about that deal.Did it years ago, seemed to make a difference, but I may be senile too.

Very nice find RND, just a little more than I can swing. I would like to get a cpu fan with the board so Kona is safe. So, I think we have a board lined up, waiting on Starkers for input on the ram style Kona has and whether it will fit.
