It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Thanks Jafo. Seriously, it wasn't a complaint. I was just asking a question so I would know. I want this computer to last as long as it can.

[What!!!! Does Kona's mind work?] ...see...

Ok, Jafo, if you say so. Sorry Kona, I guess I just don't understand you like some others do.

But I still want to point out that several of us have told you your temps are ok. It's like you don't believe us.

I saw it as complaining. I will now go to my corner.

Yes, they're fine.  Mine's currently around 48c [22 ambient]  GPU is idling at 40c [104F].

There's just 2 case fans...a 140mm LianLi inlet and a new Noctua 120 exhaust linked to the CPU one - governed speed.

The GPU has its own, as does the PSU.

My older box [now Terry's] has more, though they're smaller 100mm ...but same size box.  A P4 3.0 is a bit cooler though, anyway...

Don't get too worried about heat....more modern CPUs just STFU if it gets hot and/or will let you know rudely if your CPU fan actually dies...as mine did...

Yes, we did... and several of us 'planted the seed' and told him that case could/would overheat without adequate cooling.

Seems to me, that conflict [two different stories on the same topic] would be a cause of concern for a person with anxiety issues.

And given he wants to preserve this machine for as long as possible, they're perfectly understandable questions given the circumstances.

concern for a person with anxiety issues

I was not aware of issues.

You're OK Kona. Just sit, relax, have a beer or two or three, smile and do stuff. What kinda stuff? Um...lemme see.....um.....I know....fire up one of your games and go shoot up all the bad guys. Or you can open SKS and make a WB or.................help me think of more stuff.

SKS? WB? I don't use those so I don't have them installed. It's been years since I have used SKS or WB. I don't skin anymore. I prefer the default look of Windows 7.

My RAM gets hot to the touch.

The question begs to be asked...why are you touching the ram in the first place?

If you're that worried about heat, here's the fix, RND style...

CG, I would at least have used duct tape. And baling wire. Around these parts, that's known as a Ford repair kit.

You don't use WB?  Wow, no wonder your PC complains.....you force it to run in ugly mode.

Reminds me of when I used to go to watch a stock-car race up the bush on Boxing Day.....tools consisted of a sledge-hammer and a chainsaw...

Get you all that stuff and you don't even download my skin to support me, WTF. And, what happened to windows 8?

on Feb 21, 2013

Sorry Doortech. It's been a very long time since I have used any Stardock software. I used to skin Windows XP. I really like the default look of Vista and 7 so I just use that.

I still have Windows 8 here. I have it loaded in Virtualbox and I test drive it every now and then. Windows 7 is what I am using now.

You don,t have to use it to rate it real high and download it a few {hundred}times!Working on the stuff you asked about, but, will take a bit to get sorted.
