The pros and cons of both and my thoughts

So you can't decide between Hydraulic or Mechanical Disc Brakes? here is some of my thoughts on the subject of both, and the pros and cons of each.

Mechanical Disc Brakes:

Pros: Simple setup, the use of current V-brake levers, lower cost per set, ease of adjustability, easier to maintain.
Cons: Not as powerful as hydraulic, mechanicals do not self center on the rotor, heavier in weight than hydraulics.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes:

Pros: Extremely powerful, self centering on the rotor, much lighter by design.
Cons: Very hard to setup, hard to maintain, special fludis and tools needed for setup and maintance, Very expensive to buy.

My thoughts? depends on the buyer and the style of riding.

Help, I've got an older, but brand new wicked GT Karakoram mountain bike I bought off ebay, and after rid'n it for a year I need disc brakes... Alas my problem, no rear tabs. I've got a manitou front shock with tabs, so the rear is the problem.

I've been read'n about the converters out there, and I want mechanical disc brakes. Any suggestions?

I'm am a definate "joe user" and I'm cheap (ie: married with 2-kids). I'd like to get the disc brake special from Nashbar for $64. Anyone reading this, stay away, they're mine! I'll be ordering them tonight, I hope.

Any help finding the best way to convert to disc would be great!

You can order disc brake adapters off of ebay for 25 or 30 dollars - and they bolt right on and give you international standard tabs in the rear. I used one on my old kona. Here have a look:
