It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Well shit...I'm in Oz too and probably have a few parts lying around although I shudder someone would use a good CRT for a monitor when they could rip the cr*p out of it and use the flyback for a HV generator to shock their friends   ...  anyway I definately would have a DVD drive.  If noone in the states can help then let's showing what the Wizards of Oz can do!!

Ace - did you get my private message?

You all sure that I didn't fry the CPU with that other dead board by trying t o fire it up? I didn't see any smoke.

I again wanted to thank everyone for making this all happen. You are a wonderful group of people and I feel privileged to call you all my friends. Trust me I will pay it forward. Thank you!

If it had been the wrong wattage maybe, but not likely, just was not compatible. No support on chipsets. We will find out 100 percent soon though. We got ya covered in case!

on Feb 01, 2013

Meant if the processor you have was to low a wattage for the board, then maybe, but that new board took a low watt cpu, so tour probably safe.

on Feb 01, 2013

Yes, I got your message Kona, thank-you. I'm going to send you the complete tower and motherboard assembly anyway. This is a high performance board and I think you will appreciate the added cooling capacity of the tower once you get it fired up. I spent the day cleaning it up and looking for the old drivers disk, which I could not find, but don't worry....the board was already pre-configured and it will start up just fine once you turn it on. If you want to check on updates to the drivers you can go to the ASUS website and search drivers by product name. I've included the owners manual for the board as well as the Thermaltake tower. The delay right now is finding a box big enough to ship it in. It's 17" x 20" ....so you can see, I'll probably have to go to U-Haul rental and purchase one that is that big. Things are a little crazy here in Georgia right now. We're cleaning up after the big tornado leveled Adairsville which is just down the road from me. Just getting around has been a pain. I promise I'll get this shipped out just as quickly as possible. I've got my fingers crossed that the local UPS building is still standing....I haven't checked yet.     -- Ace --

The T and the Y are to close on my keyboard. Your,, not Tour.

on Feb 01, 2013

Hey Ace...I saw that tornado on video. It looked like a freakin' monster!

Update: First thing tomorrow, as soon as the Post Office opens Win 7...... ........oops.....wrong way.......     zzzzzziped! Off to Oregon. Enjoy Kona

on Feb 02, 2013

Yeah, it was a monster Uvah, we saw it go right over our head before it touched down. It totally leveled Adairsville which is a very small town as are most in this area. The flash flooding hasn't helped matters either. AT&T  and the electric company were pretty good about getting things back online quickly, we were only without internet for a day ! I'm going to try to get through it tommorrow to see if the UPS building is still operational.     -- Ace --

Just hang in there Terry. With the help of this awesome community, things will work out. Eventually you could have the best of both worlds, a new, up-to-date rig and OS with plenty of grunt and your old XP rig up and running better than ever with a shiney new look to use your legacy software on. My Win 7 rig is my powerhouse, but my XP rig that I am posting on now is an old eMachines T3104 in a custom case and it gets almost as much use. I have it hooked up as a media center here in my living room.

BTW, I have the 300 watt PSU from the T3104 that I could send you when I get my taxes back, you could put that in your XP box. You would just need a couple of sata power adapters as it is all molex 4pin. I may also have an IDE HDD I could part with by then if you need it. Just let me know.

Wizard, could you please send me an inventory list!  Just kidding , wow you have a lot of spare stuff. And so generous with it, you rock.

on Feb 02, 2013

Just paying it forward. This community has been very good to me.

ZOOOM!!

Off on the Snail Mail Express!

Win 7 is on its way. I can't say how long it will take though. Enjoy!
